Hezbollah MP Fadlallah: Party surprised by framework agreement

Member of Parliament Hassan Fadlallah told Al Mayadeen the party had come close to internal solutions on the Resistance and its weapons before it was "surprised" by the move toward the framework agreement with "Israel".

Hawzah News Agency- He said the agreement was handled in a "just sign" manner, without calm discussion or consultation with experts.

Fadlallah, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, spoke in a special episode marking the second anniversary of the martyrdom of Sayyed Hashem Safieddine. Sayyed Safieddine was killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on October 3, 2024.

Lebanon, "Israel", and the United States signed the US-brokered trilateral framework in Washington on June 26, following five rounds of direct US-sponsored talks that began April 14.

Its text ties any Israeli redeployment in southern Lebanon to the disarmament of the Resistance across the country. Hezbollah rejected the framework immediately, calling it a surrender and refusing any link between Israeli withdrawal and its own disarmament. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "Israel" would remain in the so-called security zone in southern Lebanon while coordinating a withdrawal, which is yet to come.

Fadlallah said Hezbollah spoke with the president's advisor to find a formula to reverse the treatment of the Resistance as illegitimate. On March 2, Lebanon's cabinet banned Hezbollah's military and security activities and demanded it hand over its weapons.

Fadlallah said Hezbollah is ready for dialogue on a national security strategy after the Israeli withdrawal. He said dialogue needs conditions so it does not produce the opposite results, adding that the party was "among the advocates of understanding despite all the wounds."

On weapons, Fadlallah said the authorities must first secure the state in the South.

"Give me a state in the South before talking about restricting weapons, war and peace," he said, adding that the authorities do not give the South enough attention.

"It is not possible to accept that there is a guardian over the Lebanese Army," he underlined, saying that authorities "handed everything to the Israeli occupation."

"It is not possible to govern the country by antagonizing half the Lebanese people," Fadlallah stressed, questioning whether the president can complete his term amid the existing stalemate in the country.

Fadlallah underscored that if the authorities are unable to protect people, they "have no right to prevent people from defending themselves." He concluded by saying that security and political issues must be resolved through internal understanding.
